From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Description of the deviation:

privacy data omitted Was operated on a VFR flight plan departing kbil on a local flight after a new avionics package had been installed. Shortly after take off, the pilot realized the trim switch had been wired oppsite of normal and decided to return to the airport. Upon entering a downwind and configuring for landing, the pilot did not remember to put the landing gear down or complete a “gumps” check and landed at kbil on rundway 28R with the gear up resulting in minor damage.

Causaul and/or contributing factors:

The pilot stated he had a high workload and distraction due to the brand new and unfamiliar avionics package that had been installed and the electric pitch trim switch that was wired backward causing the nose to trim up when pressing forward and down when pulling back on the switch which was the opposite of what he was used to. Additionally, the audible gear warning was not enabled in the new garmin glass panel so after configuring for landing and on short final, the pilot did not receive a warning that the landing gear had not been extended.

No ATC actions contributory to the event.

No recommendations for systemic corrective action.

Action taken to correct problem and prevent reoccurance:

Compliance action – counseling. The pilot acknowledged that he had a high workload due to the new avionics and the pitch trim not operating in the manner that he expected. The pilot was counseled on workload management, checklist usage and continuing controlled flight to give him time to properly diagnose the issue, develop a plan and configure the aircraft.

As the FAA filed it

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVIATION:

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS OPERATED ON A VFR FLIGHT PLAN DEPARTING KBIL ON A LOCAL FLIGHT AFTER A NEW AVIONICS PACKAGE HAD BEEN INSTALLED.
