From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

This office was notifed of this event 4 days after taking place. The aircraft was relocated prior to FAA inspection.

The purpose of this flight was an instructional flight, specifically a familiarization flight for this specific aircraft. The pilot in the left seat was receiving instruction from the flight instructor in the right seat. Both pilots have experience in aircraft with conventional landing gear (tailwheel).

The reported winds at the time of the accident varied between 290 degrees and 300 degrees at speeds between 8-10 knots.

Video evidence of the accident shows the aircraft performing a routing landing on runway 36 at the Morris municipal/James r washburn field airport (C09). The two main landing gear touchdown and the aircraft continued down the runway maintaining directional control, without incident and no abnormalities.

The aircraft began to slow. At approximately twenty [20] seconds after the main landing gear contacted the runway, the tailwheel of the aircraft contacted the runway. The aircraft maintained directional control and continued to slow.

Approximately four [4] seconds after the tailwheel made contact with the runway, the video shows the rudder deflecting to the left.

Approximately one [1] second later, the video shows the rudder being deflected to the left. The aircraft then made a turn to the right with the rudder still being deflected to the left.

The aircraft then ground looped to the right. The aircraft subsequently departed the runway to the right [east side of the runway] where it then came to a complete stop.

No injuries reported by either pilot.

The investigation was unable to identify any of the the FAA nine responsibilities.
