From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 12/30/2024 at 2137 UTC privacy data omitted was departing Jackson regional (kmkl) and had a loss of engine power and landed off runway.

privacy data omittedWas operated under 14 CFR 61 by privacy data omitted. The aircraft was a PA28-180.

Weather at time of incident.

Runway used was 11.

Statement from 8020-9. At 2137Z privacy data omitted departed runway 11. (Runway 20 was active) approximately mid-field the engine went silent. As observed from the tower. Lc and gc observed the aircraft beginning to lose altitude. The engine could be heard again but only briefly. privacy data omittedContinued to lose altitude and announced they were going down. An alert 3 was called on an un-recorded frequency due to arff's location being unknown. N33J quickly descended to the very end of runway 11 and landed the aircraft in the grass. 331 did a quick 180 and told the tower "we're good" at 2141 ARFF arrived on scene. By then the pilots were out of the aircraft claiming no injuries or damage. Emergency terminated.

Arrived at scene and the aircraft was intact and located at N35.36.0 W88.54.29. Looked inside of cockpit and fuel selector valve was in the off position. Looked in the engine compartment and a brace was broke on the engine mount. The propeller was nicked on one side. When doing the continuity checks on the flight controls the ailerons were free but the elevator was not free due to a tail fairing bent from the landing. The flight instructor and student provided a statement. Looked at the flight instructor qualifications and it was acceptable.

This is a statement from the flight instructor/pic.

On 12/30/24 around 15:20 I performed an instruction flight when on takeoff my engine quit at approximately 100 ft AGL. Before the flight, the airplane had been in the hanger. I called the FBO for them to pull out and top off the airplane. During our preflight inspection, we confirmed that we had full fuel on board. I sumped the tanks to check for water and contamination and found the sumped fuel to be clear of debris and blue in color. The pre-flight inspection was completed as provided by the checklist. The airplane was determined to be safe for flight. We started the airplane and taxied to the hold short marking to perform a run up. The engine ran normally during start-up and taxi. Throughout the run up, which included a tank selection change, the engine continued to perform normally. We started the takeoff roll. The student applied full power, and I verified that the oil pressure, fuel pressure, and other gauges were in the green. We rotated at vr and then climbed at vy. At around 100 ft the engine quit completely, I took control of the aircraft from the student, confirmed the throttle was in the full forward position. I then trimmed the airplane up three times, contacted the tower, and landed the airplane in the field next to the runway. After we landed, I secured the airplane including turning the fuel selector to the “off” position.
