What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On 16 March 2025, privacy data omitted operated privacy data omitted from jacksonville international airport (jax), jacksonville, Florida to Laguardia international airport (lga), queens, New York. The flight departed jax at 8:17PM EST and arrived in lga at 10:33PM EST. The captain (CA) was the pilot monitoring (pm), and the first officer (fo) was the pilot flying (pf).
The takeoff and cruise portions of the flight were uneventful. Convective thunderstorms were reported along the flight, spanning the entire east coast from Florida to New York. On descent, lga’s METAR at 0151Z was reporting 18017G30KTS 6SM -ra SCT009 BKN021 OVC029 13/11 A2983. At EDV4814’S estimated time of arrival into lga, there was one active SIGMET for turbulence and three active airmets for turbulence, low level wind shear and IFR conditions. Lga advised landing traffic on runway 22. The crew had the aircraft fully configured and were established on ILS22 prior to the final approach fix. As the fo began to initiate the flare, they started making control inputs due to gusting winds.
At approximately 40FT (based on crew report), the CA noted the aircraft was in a left wing down, nose left attitude at which point the CA called “I have the aircraft, go around”. The go around was initiated just above the runway surface. As the crew was climbing, the tower controller inquired if they were okay. The crew advised they were good, and the controller subsequently passed EDV4814 over to the departure frequency to be sequenced for another landing.
As the crew was on a right downwind to land again, shortly before being handed off back to lga tower, the controller mentioned to EDV4814 that someone observed sparks flying off the aircraft on the go around. The crew advised they will check it out when they land and were then passed back to lga tower. Upon checking in with lga tower, the controller verified that they were aware of what happened and had been advised by the previous controller. The second approach and landing were performed by the CA and was standard with no issues. During the landing the crew noted that emergency equipment was standing by without their knowledge.
Once the aircraft arrived at the gate, the crew found wingtip damage to the aircraft and notified maintenance personnel.
As the FAA filed it
ON 16 MARCH 2025, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OPERATED ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ FROM JACKSONVILLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JAX), JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA TO LAGUARDIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LGA), QUEENS, NEW YORK.
