From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 4/24/2024 at 1000 CDT, a Tecnam P2002 sierra mkii LSA, s/n 584, was conducting a solo cross-country flight from koch, Nacogdoches, TX to ktrl, terrell, TX, and back to koch, and on landing experienced a gust of wind which moved the aircraft off of the left side of runway 36, causing the nose gear to collapse, along with failure of the engine mount struts and firewall damage. The aircraft was being operated as a 14 CFR part 91 flight.

The pilot stated that he was returning from ktrl and listening to ATIS, which was reporting winds from 080° at 11 knots. He attempted two landings and did not feel stable and completed a go-around for both landing attempts. On his third landing attempt, ATIS was reporting winds from 080° at 17 knots. He indicated that he felt stable coming in on the approach at 50 knots and when the wheels touched down, he felt a gust of wind from his right side, which pushed him off of the runway and into the grass. He tried to apply brakes, and the nose wheel collapsed. He turned off all electronics and fuel pump and exited the plane. The aircraft flight manual shows a maximum demonstrated crosswind of 22 knots. Just prior to the accident the weather at koch was 251456Z auto 25006KT clr 21/15 A3015.

The aircraft records indicate that the last airframe and engine 100-hour inspections were completed at airframe total tach time: 840.2 on 12/11/2024 and the last conditional inspection was completed on 09/05/2024. At the time of the accident, the aircraft had accumulated 79 hours since the last 100-hour inspection.

When the NTSB report and any other additional information become available, this report will be amended as necessary.
