What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On Saturday 7/5/2025, at approximately 13:40 (EST) during a landing and takeoff roll “touch and go”, the student pilot inadvertently activated the landing gear handle to the up position, instead of the flap handle to “flaps takeoff”. The instructor pilot (ip) attempted to stop the student from engaging the landing gear handle, but did not react in time to stop the mismanaged controls. The aircraft settled onto the nose landing gear (NLG), which caused the NLG to collapse. The main landing gear remained extended, and did not collapse. The NLG doors suffered abrasion damage from contacting the runway surface. Both pilots egressed the aircraft safely while on the runway.
This was the student pilot's (sp) first day in multi-training. The sp met with the privacy data omitted CFI privacy data omitted for cockpit familiarization and simulation time. The sp was given approximately 1.5 hours of ground training on the type aircraft, and 1.5 hours of simulator training. During second touch and go landing the sp reached for landing gear handle, and inadvertently actuated the landing gear.
The sp has not participated in wings or faast training. The sp has conducted regulatory recurrent/annual safety training on jan 16,2025. The sp CFI renewal course was completed on 6/28/2025.
Student pilot flight time:
Make/model: 0 hours
90 Days: 142 (Piper cherokee/archer warrior)
Last year: 600 same incl C172
Total: 1417
Student pilot was certificated out of the atl FSDO.
The aircraft sustained minimal damage to the NLG doors and adjacent airframe skin.
NTSB participation was not required.
As the FAA filed it
ON SATURDAY 7/5/2025, AT APPROXIMATELY 13:40 (EST) DURING A LANDING AND TAKEOFF ROLL “TOUCH AND GO”, THE STUDENT PILOT INADVERTENTLY ACTIVATED THE LANDING GEAR HANDLE TO THE UP POSITION, INSTEAD OF THE FLAP HANDLE TO “FLAPS TAKEOFF”.
