From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The T-28C aircraft topped off fuel prior to departure from kenv (Wendover, UT) airport- 124.3 gallons. Weather at the time of departure was reported at [11009KT clr 10SM 30/01 A3008 SLP141]

Airport officials stated that the aircraft departed rwy 12. While during the climb out, workers nearby heard what was described as "loud popping" noises coming from the aircraft engine.

The aircraft first struck the ground tail first, measured from first ground scar to where the aircraft came to a rest as 444'. Tail fairing postioned next to first impact point. Aircraft appears to have gained lift after initial tail strike (evidence of lack of ground scarring between first impact and where the aircraft came to rest)

Aircraft nose pointed east, towards kenv 2.6NM from airport center point.

Upon aircraft walkaround, it was apparent the pilot conducted some capacity of an emergency shutdown procedure prior to or after the off-airport landing/emergency landing.

Examination of the aircraft revealed loss of significant amounts of oil as evident from left fuselage coated in oil.

Engine cowling open from impact/damage, propeller damaged.

As the FAA filed it
