What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
While en route to Liberal municipal airport (lbl) to pick up a relative, the aircraft landed on runway 17 with the landing gear retracted, resulting in a belly landing. The aircraft slid along the runway until coming to a stop.
After the aircraft came to rest, the Kansas highway patrol, the seward county sheriff’s department, the local fire department, and the airport manager responded to the scene. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was not injured.
Based on the pilot’s statement, examination of photographs provided by the Kansas highway patrol, and a review of the aircraft records by the aircraft owner, the incident was concluded to be primarily the result of pilot error due to failure to deploy the landing gear prior to landing. The pilot stated that a checklist was not being used during the approach and landing phase of the flight.
