The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
The pilot was attempting to land on runway 17. The pilot stated that prior to touch down winds were within aircraft limits but when he was about to touchdown for landing there was a 40 knot crosswind gust. (At 161953Z METAR kvel airport was reporting winds 280 at 16 knots, gusting to 25 knots. A peak gust of 37 knots at 270 was recorded one minute after the accident.) The aircraft right wing was lifted by the gust. He tried to level the aircraft with full right aileron but the wind gust was too strong. He attempted a go around by applying full power and right rudder, but it was too late and the left-wing tip struck the grond causing the aircraft to spin 180 degrees while departing the left side of the runway. The aircraft received substatial damage to the left wing and all the landing gear.
