From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On June 29,2026, at approximately 1930 (EDT), a Diamond DA40 ng was on a VFR instructional flight with the instructor and student. The aircraft departed richmond international airport (ric) to Dinwiddie County Airport (ptb) for a mock checkride. While in the traffic patern at ptb, the student performed a simulated engine out approach to runway 5, the instructor instructed the student to execute a go around. During climb at aproximately 500 feet and halfway down the runway, both heard a loud bang and the instructor took control of the aircraft. The engine load decreased to approximately 30 to 40 percent power. The aircraft was unable to produce sufficient climb performance. The aircraft impacted the tree tops in the woods 1/2 mile NE of ptb airport and came to rest inverted on the ground. The aircraft was destroyed during impact. The student pilot and flight instructor sustained minor injuries. The local weather was VFR and clear.
