Analysis

The pilot stated that he refueled at mobile but did not visually check the fuel tanks. The pilot thought he had 15 gallons of fuel remaining at the time the engine loss power. Fuel tanks were switched from left to right and held on "hi" boost (auxiliary boost pump) for a few moments. The engine did not restart. The aircraft settled into treesand came to rest on the ground below. The emergency checklist for engine failures for this aircraft states that the auxiliary fuel pump should be placed in the "on" position for 3-5 seconds then "off". The "hi" position is used only in the event of an engine-driven fuel pump failure during takeoff or high power operations.
