Preliminary report

What NTSB knew early in the investigation. It may change in the final report.

On August 27, 2026, about 1625 eastern daylight time, a Hawker Beechcraft Corporation 400A airplane, N199TT, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Newark, New Jersey. The airline transport pilot and commercial pilot were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 positioning flight. The airplane departed from Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK), Nantucket, Massachusetts, destined for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Newark, New Jersey. At 1615 the airplane was vectored to the ILS runway 22L approach for landing at EWR. According to the pilots, the automated terminal information service (ATIS) was reporting 1 1/2 miles visibility with thunderstorms and rain showers. The captain, who was the pilot monitoring during the initial approach observed and called out the runway approach lighting and runway environment. He then took over the controls from the copilot and continued flying the approach. During short final approach, a sudden heavy rain shower appeared, and both pilots lost sight of the runway. According to the pilots, the captain executed a go-around; however, the airplane continued to descend. The copilot stated they experienced possible wind shear and a loss of airspeed. The airplane’s right wing dropped, dragged across the runway surface and impacted several runway edge lights. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the right wing leading edge and right flap; the wing sustained dents and a puncture to the leading edge. The right flap could not be fully retracted and remained partially deployed. The airplane subsequently climbed and the pilots diverted to Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU), Morristown, New Jersey, about 15 nautical miles to the northwest. During the flight to MMU, the pilots declared an emergency due to flight control issues after which the airplane landed without further incident. The airplane’s cockpit voice recorder (CVR), Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS), and nonvolatile memory from other avionics were secured for download.
