Probable cause
The pilot-in-command's improper in-flight decision to continue flight into deteriorating weather conditions. Contributing to the accident was the pilot's overconfidence in his personal ability to fly in instrument conditions.
Sequence of events
NTSB’s coding before 2008: each occurrence and phase of flight, and the causes and factors under it. The codes are defined in NTSB’s coding manual.
Analysis
The pilot continued his night flight into known deteriorating weather conditions, and attempted to remain VFR. He struck trees and the airplane crashed. The pilot and passenger were trapped in the wreckage until search teams located them the next morning.
