Probable cause

Failure of the engine over terrain unsuitable for a forced landing. Contributing to the accident was the failure of the no. 5 piston for undetermined causes.

Sequence of events

NTSB’s coding before 2008: each occurrence and phase of flight, and the causes and factors under it. The codes are defined in NTSB’s coding manual.

Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malfCruise - normal
Engine assembly,piston - failure,totalCause
Forced landingDescent - emergency
On ground/water collision with objectLanding - roll
Object - tree(s)
Terrain condition - none suitableCause

Analysis

In cruise flight the no. 5 piston failed and the engine lost power. During the forced landing the airplane struck trees on landing roll. The cause of the piston failure could not be determined due to massive destruction of the assembly.
