Analysis

The pilot stated he landed long on a wet grass runway with excessive airspeed. The airplane went off the end of the runway and collided with a fence post and tree clippings.

Factual narrative

On September 13, 1999, about 1235 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-32-300, N2145N, registered to Smittys Ship Store Inc., operating as a 14 CFR Part 91 flight, crashed on landing rollout at a private airfield. The airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The commercial pilot reported no injuries. The flight originated from Dade-County Homestead General Airport, Homestead, Florida, about 5 minutes before the accident.

The pilot stated he landed long and fast on the grass runway to the east. He saw wires on the departure end of the runway and elected not to make a go-around. The airplane went off the end of the runway and collided with a fence post and tree clippings. The nose gear collapsed and the leading edge of the wing was damaged.
