SAIB’s are posted on the internet at http://av-info.faa.gov This is issued for informational purposes only and any recommendation for corrective action is not mandatory.
Introduction:
The purpose of this Special Airworthiness Information Bu lletin (SAIB) is to provide safety information to Scheibe Models SF 25B and SF 25C series sailplane owners on the following:
• Flight Controls – Cracks in the aileron steel pipe spar around the welded hinge bushings.
Background:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed a potential safety problem that may occur on the Scheibe Models SF 25B and SF 25C series sailplanes.
Safety Issue:
The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) has issued Germ an Airworthiness Directive 1999-340 on the service difficulty issue listed above. The manufacturer has determ ined that there is a potential for cracks to develop in the aileron steel pipe spar around the welded hinge bushings. If this condition ex ists, further fatigue and cracking may lead to the loss of that respective aileron.
Service Bulletin 653-73 is attached for your informati on. The FAA highly encourages you to comply with this Service Bulletin. The FAA has also attached LBA AD 1999-340 for your information and review.
General Information:
The FAA provides this information as a courtesy to operators of the Scheibe Models SF 25B and SF 25C series owners/operators because this is a known saf ety issue. The FAA does not issue Airworthiness Directives for sailplanes that do not have a U.S. type certificate. This safety issue will not be tracked or enforced by the FAA. Furthermore, the FAA will not use an SAIB to track all safety related items for nontype certificated products.
