Introduction:
The purpose of this Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) is to remind owners and operators of hot air balloons that AD 2000-04-12 applies to all balloons that use the Cameron/Thunder & Colt Ltd.
Model CB2380 and Model CB2383 titanium propane cylinders regardless of the make and model.
Background:
Cameron/Thunder & Colt Ltd. has discovered a possibility of fatigue cracking of the longitudinal weld on certain titanium propane cylinders. These propane cylinders are identified as Model CB2380 serial numbers up to and including BT0143, and Model BT2383 serial numbers up to and including BT0076. This failure could result in an uncontrolled release of propane vapors in close proximity of the burners, and an explosion or fire could result.
Recommendation:
Although these cylinders are most frequently found on Cameron Balloons US and Cameron Balloons Ltd./Thunder & Colt balloons, some may have been approved through Field Approval or Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to be used on balloons of other manufacture. All propane cylinders of this make, model, and serial number range are affected by AD 2000-04-12 which requires compliance with Cameron Balloons Ltd./Thunder & Colt Alert Service Bulletin SB8 Issue A, dated January 28, 2000.
