Introduction

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin advises you, owners and operators of Lycoming Engines (Lycoming) O-320-H, O- 360-E, LO-360-E, TO-360-E, LTO-360-E series engines of the following approval of an alternative method of compliance (AMOC) to the requirements of Airworthiness Directive (AD) 80-04-03 R2.

We have determined that the anti-wear additive contained in AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus is the same as Lycoming additive LW-16702 and therefore meets the requirements of Lycoming Service Bulletin 446B, 446C, and 446D. We have approved engine oil change to AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus as an AMOC to the requirements of AD 80-04-03 R2, paragraph b.1, with the limitations described below.

Background

AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus contains an additive that is identical to Lycoming’s additive LW-16702, which AD 80-04-03 R2 requires to be added to certain O-360 engine models at each 50-hour oil service interval. We determined that the use of AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus provides the necessary anti-wear protection at engine start-up and therefore satisfies the intent of the AD. AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus joins three other additized aviation oils that have been approved as AMOCs to AD 80- 04-03 R2.

We’ve listed the four approved additized oils in the table 1.

Recommendations

We approve engine oil change to AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus as an AMOC to the requirements of AD 80-04-03 R2, paragraph b.1

Use of this AMOC is not mandatory, however, if you elect to use AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus, or any of the other approved additized oils when complying with AD 80-04-03 R2, the following limitations are applicable:

• If you elect to use approved additized oil at the 50-hour oil service interval, we require that you use the same brand and formula additized oil for any makeup oil additions performed during the service interval.

• If the same brand and formula approved additized oil is unavailable for make-up, a maximum of 2 quarts of a Lycoming approved oil listed in Lycoming Service Instruction No. 1014M can be added between 50 hour oil service intervals.

• If you add more than 2 quarts of a Lycoming approved oil listed in Lycoming Service Instruction No.

1014M during the 50 hour oil service interval, then we require that you add Textron Lycoming additive LW-16702.

• If you extend the oil service interval beyond 50 hours, we require that you add Textron Lycoming additive LW- 16702 at 50 hours to maintain compliance with the AD.

• Mark each additized oil can with the statement identifying it as having been approved as an AMOC to the requirements of AD 80-04-03 R2, paragraph b.1.
