DURING CLIMB THE NR 1 ENGINE STARTED SURGING UNCONTROLLABLY. FLIGHT CREW PERFORMED A CAUTIONARY ENGINE SHUTDOWN AND RETURNED TO GSO. MAINTENANCE SENT A MECHANIC VIA CHARTER FLIGHT FROM STL TO GSO. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED AND REMOVED AND REPLACED NR 1 ENGINE.
