Note 1: Hub Model Designation (See Notes 4 and 5)
5 D 3 1 - N 338 B2 YL
Y when used with 5D3 or 5D31 models indicates o ptional start locks
L when used denotes left-hand rotation
One or more alphanumeric hub descriptor (first character must be an alpha betical letter)
“A” in the first character indicates a small diameter c ylinder
“B” in the first character indicates a large diameter cylinde r
“C” in the first character indicates a 5” diameter bolt-on c ylinder
Any other alphabetical character liste d here denotes a minor change not affecting eligibility
A n y numeric character indicates minor configuration change not affecting eligibility
E x t e n s i o n :
Distance in inches between en gine flange and blade centerline
(implied decimal after first digit)
E x a m ple: 338 = 3.38 inches
M o u n t i n g flange :
N denotes flan ge with eight 9/16” bolts and two ½” dowels on a 4.25” bolt circle
NK denotes flange with eight through bolts and two ½” dowels on a 4.25” bolt circle
O p e r a t i n g M o d e :
1 - w h e n p r e s e n t , designates engine electronic control system
3 – Constant speed, feathering, reversing, external beta ring
5 - Constant speed, feathering, reversing, internal beta feedback mechanism, start locks
Preload t ype :
Basic hub series (D)
Number of blades
Note 2: Blade Model Designation (See Notes 5 and 6)
H 78 D 01 A B - 2
Number of inches cut off from (or added to if +) basic diamete r
B or K denotes deicing boots
A n y other character identifies a minor design change or unique application
Basic blade model (two character numeric)
First Character: Basic blade series for hub model (must match hub series)
Second character when used: Major blade characteristic
Basic diameter rounde d to the nearest inch. Add four inch correction for all blade models.*
Denotes blade configuration:
Blank – Right-hand tractor
H - Right-Hand pushe r
J - Left hand tractor
L - Left-hand pusher
* Diameter limits are nominal diameters of the assembled propeller. They do not include the + or – 1/8 inch manufacturing
tolerance the FAA allows for propellers with a basic diameter of less than 14 feet.

700 psig
(b) All propeller models have counterweighted blades and use governor oil to decrease pitch.
(c) All governors and propeller control systems must be approved as part of the aircraft installation regardless of manufacturer.
(d) Hartzell propeller model 5D31-( ) is controlled by an in tegrated electronic system which is part of the engine type
design. Propeller model 5D31-( ) comp lies with the propeller airworthiness requirements when used with the
engine(s) listed in Hartzell Type Design Data (Manual 159). Any change to the engine, including its control system,
which affects or may affect the propeller approval must be substantiated to demonstrate that the propeller as
integrated with the changed engine, including its control syst em, still complies with the propeller certification basis.
Also, any change to the engine resulting from a change to the propeller must be substantiated to demonstrate that the
changed engine still complies with the engine certification basis.
Note 4: Featherin g
(a) The 5D3 and 5D31, and 5D5 models incorporate feathering and unfeathering features.
Reversing
(a) The 5D3, 5D31, and 5D5 models are approved for installation as reversing propellers with appropriate
reversing controls.
Note 5: Left-Hand Models (see Notes 1 and 2)
The left-hand version of an approv ed propeller model is approved at the same rating and diameter as listed for
the ri ght-hand model.
Note 6: Interchan geability
(a) Refer to Hartzell service Letter HC-SL-30-260 for ice protection system component interchangeability.
Note 7: Accessories
(a) Pro peller spinner. (weight of spinner extra)
(1) Approved with Hartzell and other manufacturers’ spinners when listed on Hartzell type design data.
(2) All propeller spinners must be approved as part of the aircraft installation regardless of manufacturer.
(See NOTE 10)
(b) Pro peller deicing (weight of deicing equipment extra)
(1) Propeller models listed in this data sheet are a pproved for use with propeller ice protection equipment
listed in Hartzell Manual 159( ) or in other Hartzell type design data.
(2) All propeller ice protection equipment must be approve d as part of the aircraft installation regardless of
manufacturer. (See NOTE 10)
Note 8: Shank Fairings Not applicable.
Note 9: Special Limits Not applicable.
Note 10: Propeller installation must be ap proved as part of the aircraft Type Certificate and demonstrate compliance with the
applicable aircraft airworthiness standards.
Propeller models listed herein consist of basic hub and blade models. Most propeller models include additional
characters to denote minor changes and specific features as explained in Notes 1 and 2. Refer to the aircraft Type
Certificate Data Sheet for the specific propeller model applicable to the installation.
Propellers with composite blades must be evaluated for bird impact resistance prior to approval on any type aircraft.
Hartzell Propeller must perform tests a nd/or analyses based on aircraft conf iguration and operating conditions to
determine the potential hazard as a result of a bird strike.
