From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: Piper PA-31, N199DS, amf 340 departed VFR rnd-ely. Approximately 5 miles northeast of rnd pilot advised he wanted to return due to a minor engine problem. Pilot landed w/o incident. Taxiing into ring jet center, smoke was observed from left engine. Tower had called an alert one. C 1527 fire 3 was terminated. Mechanic determined that one of the turbo shaft bearings and seal were worn out, causing the turbine blades to not rotate and letting oil bypass into the hot exhaust causing the smoke. The turbo was removed and replaced by a serviceable unit. Engine runup normal. Pilot resumed flight. (Work order 2038) precision air.
