From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on October 18, 1995, united airlines (uala) B747-122 aircraft N4717U flt 821 departed Honolulu International Airport for narita, japan. Approximately twenty (20) minutes after departure, a fire warning at the forward lower lobe galley went off. The flight crew dumped fuel, returned to Honolulu and landed over gross weight at approximately 652,000 lbs. The aircraft landed with no further incident. The flight crew and passengers were deplaned normally. The fire was caused by oven overheating. A flight attendant noticed the smoke from the oven and opened the door. The flame shot out. The fire was immediately extinguished. Inspection of the oven showed that the oven door seal was intact thus containing the fire within the oven until the oven door was opened. Inspection of the lower galley revealed that the surrounding area outside the oven was slightly scorched by the fire. The defective oven was sent to uala san francisco maintenance for further investigation. Incident closed no pilot deviation NMAC IWP1396001
