From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 11-11-95 at approximately 1205 PST, N912BS, a leon b. smith, jr., soneria ii, owned and operated by leon b. smith jr., was on a FAR 91 pleasure flight under visual meteorological conditions through out all flight conditions at an altitude of 1500 MSL over Woodville, CA when the pilot experienced total engine failure. The commercial pilot had not filed a flight plan and did not have a weather brief. The pilot, the only occupant, sustained minor injuries. The flight originated at porterville municipal airport at approximately 1200 PST. The pilot crashed in an alfalfa field with minor damage to the aircraft. Analysis disclosed the engine dual coils had overheated causing internal failure that resulted in no high voltage output to the sparkplugs. The source of the malfunction was traced to the electronic tachometer grounding fault. The negative wires leading from both coils were connected together through a single pole switch direct to the electronic tachometer. This incident is closed.
