From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 02-20-96 at 1857Z time, aircraft N444WH landed on runway 35 at ojc. During landing, nose gear collapsed causing aircraft to stop at midfield off east edge of runway 35. This is an amateur built aircraft. It was determined that free castering nose gear had turned sideways upon gear retraction on take-off from tulsa international airport. This resulted in the nose gear to not fully retract and stay in a sideways position (perpendicular to the nose of aircraft). This placed the gear in an inappropriate position on landing. The probable cause is that the nose gear does not have a self centering mechanism in the strut assembly. Furthermore, the nose gear support links (part number GM027-4) failed to with stand the sharp turning forces of the free castering wheel. The manufacturer of this amateur built kit will furnish an improved nose strut. This improved nose strut has a self centering mechanism in order to preclude the possibility of this incident recurring. This incident is closed. Incident no. CE96IGA0029

As the FAA filed it

CE96IGA0029
