From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: aircraft departed the blm airport in VFR conditions. While enroute aircraft began to run rough and a severe vibration occurred in level flight at approximately 2900 ft. MSL. The pilot made an emergency landing in a farmer's field without incident. An inspection of the aircraft's engine revealed an uncontained engine failure. Further investigation revealed #3 cylinder had separated from crankcase causing subsequent #3 piston failure allowing #3 piston connecting rod to sever cam shaft. Engine s/n L-3150-76 will undergo teardown analysis by FAA and Lycoming. Accident investigation accompanied by superior parts representatives on March 15, 1996. privacy data omitted
