From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: took off lit - climbing thru 4000 ft., noticed engine sounding less than normal. Asked for flight level 4500 ft. leveled off, and noticed manifold pressure dropped to 25 in. 30 seconds later had smoke in the cockpit. Asked for vector to closest airport. Turned to Conway, AR had field in sight. Manifold pressure went to 15 in. Lowered gear then at three miles out lost all power. Established best glide, then determined could not make airport, landed aircraft in a field, no fire, damage or injuries. This incident is closed. Investigation revealed exhaust flange coming off #6 cylinder broke. Hot exhaust destroyed magneto and harness, causing engine failure.
