From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: engine failed on an extended downwind for runway 04 at (ikk) Kankakee airport. PIC was unable to restart engine. Aircraft impacted the ground 150 feet short of threshold for runway for an extended centerline. Aircraft damage was limited to propeller, landing gear, tailsection and minor wing damage. No structural damage. No injuries reported. Investigation of the aircraft revealed a line to the left wing oil cooler separated causing all of the oil to be discharged outboard. The engine lost power due to a catastrophic failure as a result of the loss of oil supply and oil pressure. The modification of this aircraft- that is - the installation of the curtiss wright engine - involves the use of non-standard devices. The limited number of this model aircraft, modified as such is minor in numbers. This aircraft was modified for the purpose of air racing. The work on the aircraft was correct. However a parker bead on an aluminum line failed, causing the incident.

THE MODIFICATION OF THIS AIRCRAFT- THAT IS - THE INSTALLATION OF THE CURTISS WRIGHT ENGINE - INVOLVES THE USE OF NON-STANDARD DEVICES.
