From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: with regards to the precautionary landing at approximately 1615 on 9-8-96 in N2072M, there was control hindrance in flight. At level cruise of 70% torque, 640 degrees tot, 100 KTS IAS, 7,000 feet MSL, 91% N1, 100% N2, 320 lbs. Fuel and 6 passengers aboard, there was a loud bang heard overhead followed immediately by a drop in the collective. The collective control remained about 1 inch above the full down position which corresponds to a neutral pitch position. There was a pulsating up and down motion of about 1/4 inch with a minor vertical vibration in the helicopter. Full control was available on the cyclic and antitorque pedals and no fluctuations were encountered with those controls. Engine power remained at full with no yaw. A shallow approach was made to an open area south of dripping springs. No damage was sustained by the aircraft or persons aboard. Retaining nut found backed off. No NMAC or pilot deviation report filed. This report and investigation are closed.
