From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Failed to use carb heat prior takeoff. Landed plowed field. Conditions good for carb ice. (-23) Mr. G. Jenkins was responsible for the aircraft, he was flying the aircraft without a pilot certificate. He had a rated pilot, zachry marchant with him when the accident occurred. Mr. Z marchant did not know that Mr. Jenkins did not have a pilot's certificate (Mr. Marchant is a rate pilot). After speaking to Mr. Jenkins on the phone form his hospital room on 05/09/97, he said he was responsible for the flight and that Mr. Marchant was not responsible. The aircraft was attempting to take off when the engine quit. Probable cause is engine icing. Aircraft crashed as the operator attempted a 180 degre turn from approximately 100-200 ft AGL.
