From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: during preflight, pilot failed to visually check fuel quantity. He practiced takeoffs and landings in the traffic at hillsboro, Oregon for approximately one hour, then departed the airport to the west to practice upper air maneuvers (stalls, slow flight, etc.). He then descended to an altitude that would allow him to do ground reference maneuvers. The engine sputtered several times, pilot applied carburetor heat with no improvement in performance, ensured that mixture was full rich, and cycled the throttle. He then checked the fuel quantity gauges and determined that he was out of fuel. Selected a field and completed an off airport landing with no damage to aircraft or injury to pilot. A letter of re-examination was issued to the pilot on July 14, 1997. Re-examination completed August 1, 1997. This incident is closed with this report.
