From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: student pilot (jeffery schneider) departed from (vih) vichi, MO headed to jef (jefferson city, MO) on a solo trip (cross country) originating from sus (spirit of st. louis airport). Engine failed in-flight. Student noticed a burning smell then landed the aircraft in a farmer's field near Vienna, MO. Investigation by the FAA on 09/02/97 revealed the LH muffler (p/n:0450400-3) aft end cap was missing. Hot exhaust gases burned the main wiring harness on the LH side of the engine firewall, shorting the engine wiring which caused the engine to lose power. We were unable to determine when the end cap cracked. And there were no other discrepencies noted. Incident closed with this report.
