From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(Tty) acft crashed beyond the departure end of the runway while attempting to land. Madera, CA. (.4) the pilot reported that he was on approach to runway 30. As he initiated the flare, he felt the airplane bleed off airspeed quicker than anticipated and realized that 'the aircraft was quickly starting to stall.' The pilot stated that he knew that he was too high and applied power to arrest the stall but the left wing dropped and seemed to start flying again when power was applied. The pilot then attempted to abort the landing and execute a go-around but the aircraft veered to the left off the runway. The left wingtip contacted the ground, followed by the engine and right wing. The right wing broke off at the wing splice point and the aircraft nosed over and came to rest inverted. The pilot reported that at the time of the accident he had logged only 1 hour in this type of aircraft. (-23) dragged wing on flare. Cartwheeled off runway. Sheared wing spar. Y (-23) on February 2, 1998 at approximately 1630 PST, a sweet-house r&d mustang ii homebuilt experimental airplane, piloted by a private pilot, flying in visual meteorological conditions, was on final approach, with 30% flap, landing at Madera muni airport, CA, on runway rw 30. The pilot flared the airplane and pulled 40% flap, struck the hard surface of the runway with the left main landing gear, the airplane bounced into flight with the left wing low uncontrollable left roll, as the pilot applied full power on the engine. The left wing tip impacted the terrain soft field, erupted the airplane on the nose inverted tumble impacting and crushing the right wing tip shearing the front spar deflecting the wing down, pivoting around the wing uprighting the airplane, coming to rest on the nose facing 180 degrees from the initial flight line of impact.

As the FAA filed it
