What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Pilot stated he was level at 6000 feet in a cruise configuration of 22.5 in hg and 2500 RPM, leaned to 16 (ghp) on the fuel flow indicator. He was on an IFR flight plan in VMC conditions (5M in haze). The flight had originated at martin state, baltimore, MD. The pilot stated the oil was at 10 quarts on preflight prior to departure and that the fuel tanks were "topped". Approximately 1.5 hours into the flight the pilot experienced a rough running engine that lasted about 2 or 3 seconds and then he noticed the propeller had stopped with no windmilling. The pilot state he switched to the other fuel tank and selected boost pump on. He also switched from one magneto to the other. The pilot placed the aircraft in a peanut field. The nosewheel broke off the aircraft come to rest with only minor damage. The pilot had 3 children as passengers and was returning from a ballgame. Investigation revealed an abundance of 100LL fuel and it appearaed to be uncontaminated. Oil quanity indicated 7 quarats (12 qt. Max), however the aircraft was resting on its nose about 20 degrees down. Investigation revealed the engine had seized and the propeller could not rotate on complete revolution. A malfunction or defect report(m or d) will be filed as soon as the engine teardown results and analysis are completed.
