From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Acft crashed under unknown circumstances, the 2 POB suffered fatal inj., acft was destoryed. (-23)on September 12, 1998, at 10:15 MDT, Grumman American AA-1B, registration number N6288L, registered to and operated by john f. crater (pilot), impacted terrain while maneuvering 1 mile west of coloado Springs east airport (CO50), Ellicott, Colorado. The commercial pilot and his one passenger were fatally injured. It appears that this flight was a familiarization flight for the passenger, promoted by the eaa "young eagles", and had departed meadow lake airport (oov), peyton, CO, approximately twenty minutes earlier. Preliminary investigation indicate that power failure was caused by fuel exhaustion. It also appears that the crash was due to loss of aircraft control resulting in a stall.

As the FAA filed it
