From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot reported that oil was leaking onto the acft wiandshield and that he was trying to make it to the arpt, the acft overflew the arpt due to oil on he windshield, the acft struck trees, flipped over, and came to rest in a common area behind some houses, other circumstances ae unknown. (From .4) the pilot reported that during maneuvering flight, at about 500 feet AGL, and 1/2 mile offshort, the engine and cowling began to shake, the engine began to sputter, and the windscreens became covered with oil. He made a turn westbound toward land, and declared an emergency, intending to land at the nearest airport. He reported the engine power available would not sustain level flight, and he started a slow descent. Neither the pilot nor his front seat passenger acquired a visual on the airport. The pilot overflew the airport and forced landed in a residential area 2 miles west of the airport. Examination of the engine failure of the 12 cylinder holddown studs of the no. 7 cylinder. (-23) on April 2, 1999 at approx. 1557, a Waco Ymf-5, N820MM, crashed in a residential area of Boca Raton. Pilot and passenger received major and minor injuries respectively. Pilot and passenger was on a area familiarization flight from ft. lauderdale executive airport (fxe) when pilot declared emergency due to engine vibration and heavy engine oil leak. Post inspection of engine by FAA aviation safety inspectors reveiled the cylinder base hold down studs of no. 7 cylinder had failed separating the intake tube and associated oil hoses and drains. Visual indications of the aft, top and bottom studs appeared to have been broken previously and progressed until all failed.
