From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

-23) Cruising at altitude of 2700 ft. approx. 47 miles west of st. charles airport (3SQ) (departure point), pilot (thebeau) stated that the aircraft engine started running rough. He checked the mixture and switched fuel tanks per the checklist. There was no change in oil pressure and temperature were in the green. He contacted missou approach and requested to land at the nearest airport and was informed to fly heading 040 approx. 8 miles to Montgomery City airport (4MO). Pilot (thebeau) checked the engine gauges again and noted that the oil pressure was on the low side of the green. He then spotted the airport (4MO) and entered a right base leg for the runway. On final approach pilot (thebeau) pulled the throttle out and noted that the manifold pressure was still 19". Pilot (thebeau) decided to make a go around because the airfield was fairly short and with trees at both ends. He then added full power for the go around and the manifold pressure dropped off from there. Pilot (thebeau) then headed for the closest open field which was approx. 1/2 to 1 mile to his left. As he got closer the engine power decreased rapidly. Pilot (thebeau) cleared a ditch in the field, the en gine quit operating and forced him to land in a plowed dirt field just short of a fence. Pilot (thebeau) removed his two children from the aircraft. There were no injuries. Pilot noted oil streaming down left side of fuselage coming from the engine. An investigation revealed the number 4 engine cylinder had a hole on the top side. The engine was not ceased and there was no sign of fuel contamination. Malfunction or defect report will follow.

As the FAA filed it
