From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On August 2, 1999 at 1130 PST, Piper PA-44-180, N2126X left main landing gear collapsed on landing rollout. Flight was for instruction, and both pilots reported that the gear would not lock in the up position on previous takeoff. Cycling the gear enabled pilots to get gear in down position, with three green gear indicators. A fly by was conducted at chino airport, with ATC confirming all gear in the down positions. Upon touchdown at lgb, pilots report the aircraft slowly sank to the left until finally the left gear collapsed. Tire tread marks from the left gear were apparent for over 220 feet. Aircraft slid approx. 160 feet after total gear collapse before coming to a stop, striking one blue runway light with the left wing. Nose and right main gear remained extended. Examination of the gear revealed the trunion severed 5 inches above the base, with associated internal component damage. Gear associated linkages were damaged during gear collapse. M or d received indicating trunion failure, forward to AFS-620.
