From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The pilot took off at 1410 EDT, on 8/28/99, from the Abingdon, VA (vji) airport with a passenger for a VFR navigational flight. Upon returning to the vji airport for a landing the landing gear would not extend fully. The pilot elected to fly in the local area to burn off fuel and try to extend the landing gear manually. When the pilot was unable to extend the landing gear fully into the down and locked position he declared an emergency and landed next to rwy 6 on the grass. The landing gear collapsed causing damage to the belly of the aircraft and to both propellers and engines. The pilot sustained minor injuries and the passenger was unhurt.
