From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Air carrier incident, Pittsburgh airport, PA 07/26/01. At 1712E, united parcel service flight #5524, a B727, landed on runway 10L after the number two engine failed for unknown reasons. The ARFF responded and the aircraft taxied to the ramp without incident. Further investigation revealed that the #2 engine developed a vibration cruise flight (flight level 270) in light icing conditions, when the crew powered back the #2 engine, the engine vibration was still out of limits also the engine indication rolled back below flight idle parameters, so the crew shut down the engine. Prior to shut down the crew noted a whining noise. The #2 engine was replaced. This incident is closed.
