From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot stated he was attempting a soft field takeoff at allison woods, a grass strip near Statesville, NC. Aircraft departed the prepared portion of the grass strip and ran into a treeline. METAR weather report recorded at 1642 EDT at Statesville muni (svh), approximately 5 miles southwest of the grass strip, showed scattered clouds, with the winds from 180 degrees at 6 knots. In attempting the takeoff, the pilot stated that everything was normal until the aircraft began drifting to the left. He applied right rudder and brake to counter the drift, but at approximately 55 knots the aircraft veered abruptly to the left, and the pilot was unable to counter the drift. The aircraft departed the prepared portion of the grass strip, the left wing impacted the treeline, then spun the aircraft around, so that the right wing came to rest in the treeline. The throttle was found in the full open position, indicating that the pilot did not reduce power to abort the takeoff.
