From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) While maneuvering to park on hardstand #79 (iat ramp at jfk), the left winglet of aircraft N277WA made contact with the roof of a planemate parked along side the fence bordering the left side of the hardstand. The winglet was substantially damaged. The incident occurred at 1922L on 08/26/01. The captain of the aicraft was following guidance provided by a marshaller and wing walker (for the left wing) when contact occurred. The marshaller and wing walker misjudged the proximity of the left wing tip to the planemate. The geometry of hardstand #79 is not compatible with the geometry of the MD11.
