From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 10/04/01 at approximately 22:04 CDT ups flight 671, ice-sgf, experienced a weather radar failure while being vectored around a prohibited area and a line of thunderstorms. Because of the radar failure the captain decided the best course of action was to return to ict and he asked for a heading back to ict. ATC assigned the flight a heading that the captain determined would take him into a cell. He notified ATC that he could not accept that heading and needed an immediate right turn to a 27O degree heading to avoid the cell. ATC reissued the original heading and cautioned the flight not to turn any further right since this would take the flight into a prohibited area. The captain immediately declared an emergency and turned to the 270 degree heading to avoid the cell. ATC coordinated with whiteman afb approached control as ups flight 671 entered and exited the prohibited area. Flight 671 arrived back in ict and documented the radar malfunction in the aircraft logbook. Incident #CE2002IAC0009 is considered closed with the filing of this report - reference ptrs #'s 2002B003.
