From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft had just completed a banner tow operation. There were two pilots on board, the pilot in the right seat was receiving instruction on banner tower procedures. After a normal banner drop the aircraft climbed to pattern altitude and entered a left down wind for runway 06 at Flagler County Airport. When the aircraft turned base to final for runway 06 it remained in a left bank turning past the runway heading and impacted the ground nose down with a bank angle of 90 degrees. The aircraft was found in the trees resting on its nose with the tail straight up. Both pilots received fatal injuries. Several training aircraft from embry riddle university were operating at or near the airport at the time of the accident. All of the students and instructors of these aircraft reported hearing the pilot of the accident aircraft declare an emergency and state that he had lost aileron control. Inspection of the wreckage revealed a badly rusted and broken aileron cable and a rusted and broken flap cable. See inspector statement for details.
