From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The omni air international (cnma) captain reported upon landing at Oranjestad, aruba (aua) on 03/30/02 that the control tower advised the crew that a piece of cowling from the two engine was missing. During the walk around the crew found that the #2 engine left fan cowl missing from the tail of the aircraft. Aircraft N630AX engine was worked on the day before 03/29/02, at portsmouth/old pease airforce base. The aircraft was ferried to boston, Massachusetts (bos) and departed for aua 03/30/02. The fan cowl left the aircraft between bos and aua. Cnma maintenance found the fan cowl hinges broken off. Cnma reported that the upper hinge attachment points were undamaged. It appeared that the hing attaching hi lock fasteners had sheared off. All cnma fleet of DC-10 aircraft was inspected for defects on the fan cowl's hinge, hinge attaching hardware and the latch mechanisms. No defects were reported found. Cannot at this time determine if cowl latches were installed properly, due to the fan cowl was not recovered. As a preventative measure in case the cowl was not properly latched cnma has required that an entry made in the aircraft maintenance log and a required inspection be accomplished. This will be a requirement on opening any cowling (fan, reverser, or core) on the #2 engine.

As the FAA filed it
