From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(.19) On may 31, 2002, at 1505 central daylight time, an experimental golias RV6 single-engine airplane, N16PG, sustained substantial damage when it impacted terrain near Leander, Texas. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot. The private pilot and his passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a visual flight rules (VFR) flight plan was not filed for the 49 code of federal regulations part 91 personal flight. The flight originated from lago vista, Texas, at 1450. In a telephone interview with the NTSB investigator-in-charge, the pilot reported that on his second practice short field approach and landing to runway 35, he was maintaining an airspeed of 75 miles per hour and "a steeper approach angle." The pilot then reported flaring too high, the airplane "mushing," impacting the runway 300 to 400 feet past the landing threshold, and bouncing once. The pilot then added power, but the airplane veered to the left resulting in a loss of directional control. After he "cut the power," the airplane went off the left side of the runway, subsequently impacting a berm and various small trees and bushes. The airplane came to rest on its nose and right wing, approximately 45 feet left of the runway. A bush was imbedded in the right wing back to the leading edge spar, resulting in structural damage to the right wing. At 1455, the georgetown (gtu) automated weather observing system, located 10 nautical miles northeast of the accident site, reported the wind from 060 degrees at 12 knots with gust to 17 knots. (-23) on may 31, 2002, RV6, N16PG, s/n 23918, while attempting to land at kitty Hill airport (77T) Leander, Texas, aircraft ran off left hand side of runway. The aircraft went through tall grass, struck a berm and trees. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. No one was reportedly injured on board the aircraft or on the ground. There was no post crash fire.
