From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(.19) On October 13, 2002, about 1525 pacific daylight time, a Piper PA-28-151, N75164, collided with a runway sign during landing rollout on runway 29 at the San Luis Obispo airport, San Luis Obispo, California. The airplane was substantially damaged, and the student pilot was not injured. The solo instructional flight was performed under 14 CFR part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time. The flight originated from the airport about 1430. The pilot reported to the national transportation safety board investigator that the accident occurred while she was practicing takeoffs and landings in the traffic pattern. The pilot stated that she lost directional control when she made her 6th landing and attempted to exit the runway following receipt of an air traffic instruction. (-23) the pilot of N75164 gave the following statement. On Sunday, October 13, I went up to practice touch and goes. I landed for the last time at approximately 1525 PDT. I was slowing down in an attempt to turn off on juliet taxiway when the controller instructed me to exit on rwy 25 and taxi to the west side for parking lot and contact ground on 121.6. I realized that I was at rwy 25 and needed to turn immediately. As I started turning I realized I wasn't going to be able to safely make the turn onto rwy 25 because I was still going too fast (I was afraid of ground looping). I corrected to the right to get back to rwy 29 and ended up in the grass between the runway and the taxiway. I hit a runway marker with the left wing, ended up on taxiway juliet and taxied to parking. The aircraft received substantial damage and the sole occupant was not injured. The aircraft was operated under CFR 14 part 91 and no flight plan was filed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident.
