From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On January 15, 2003, at 13:30 hours, N4497X a Piper pa 28-181 hit a snow bank while on an aborted low approach to runway 29 at Great Barrington, MA. The flight instructor had briefed his student on making a low approach to runway 29. As the aircraft approached runway 29 the student got behind controlling the aircraft which resulted in a slow and low configuration. The instructor instructed the student to go around at which time the student hesitated and retarded the throttle to idle causing the aircraft to sink rapidly. The instructor took control of the aircraft and advanced the throttle to full power. The aircraft regained flying speed but not before contacting the snow bank at the edge of runway 29. The aircraft continued flying around the traffic pattern with its left landing gear oleo strut and wheel hanging by a brake hose. The impact with the snow bank caused the left main landing gear housing to crack allowing the oleo strut to separate from it's housing. The aircraft landed on runway 29 with damage to the left main gear strut housing and the trailing edge of the left flap.
