From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) According to PIC, while conducting spin flight testing at 14000', on the prototype Lancair columbia 400AIRCRAFT, the PIC was unable to recover from the third spin. He deployed the aircrafts spin chute and the aircraft recovered from the spin. PIC then attempted to release the chute, however both the mechanical and electrical releases failed to operate. PIC attempted to fly the aircraft with chute deployed but was unsuccessful. PIC opened door, exited airplane, deployed personal chute at 6500'. Aircraft impacted ground and was consumed by post crash fire.
