From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft had just performed an engine oil change at Bartow municipal airport, but he failed to add new oil. He departed Bartow with the intention of flying the airplane to winter haven airport. At approximately one mile north-northwest of Bartow, his engine lost power, and the pilot attempted an emergency landing on sheffield road. All was going well until the pilot extended his glide to avoid an automobile which pulled onto sheffield road from a side street. When the pilot touched down, his right wing struck a mailbox; shortly thereafter, the road made a significant curve to the left. The plane was moving too fast to negotiate the curve; it continued straight ahead into a stand of trees, which damaged the leading edges of both wings, the nose landing gear, and engine cowling. Post-accident engine inspection showed the engine oil dipstick to be dry. During interview with the pilot, he admitted he forgot to add oil. The pilot also admitted that he did not possess a medical certificate, and during the past 90 days, he's been flying about every other day. The pilot's last flight physical was performed 08/19/1996, but a medical certificate was not issued. privacy data omitted

As the FAA filed it

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^
