From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) YAK-55M, N55YA, was enroute from tallahassee, Florida to montgomery, Alabama when it experienced a loss of power. The aircraft was in cruise flight at 3,000' AGL when the aircraft encountered a severe vibration and loss of thrust from the engine. The pilot reduced power, secured engine and landed in a cornfield near Troy, Alabama. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and wing structure due to the severity of terrain encountered during landing in the cornfield. Pilot reported after landing he discovered the propeller would freely rotate indicating de-coupling of powerplant. Engine teardown is scheduled for December 10, 2003.
